What is the science behind genetically modified foods?Genetically engineered plants are generated in a laboratory by altering their genetic makeup and are tested in the laboratory for desired qualities. This is usually done by adding one or more genes to the foods genome using genetic engineering techniques.

What types of foods are affected by this technology?
  • papaya
  • potato
  • zucchini
  • sweet pepper
  • rice
  • cotton
  • bean
  • tomato
  • salmon
  • corn
  • eggplant
  • squash
  • melon
  • plum
  • soy bean
What are the problems with this technology?
when entering the gene a virus could be hidden in it and it could start an epidemic. this once happened to a papaya and it started the papaya ring spot virus.

What action has been taken to try and prevent the technology developing?
no movement to try prevent the development of GM foods technology is known. there are people who chose not to eat food that is known to be genetically modified.

How can you find out information about these questions:
  • you could interview scientist who study GM foods
  • you can go on search engines
  • ask fellow peers
